Sources inside Volkswagen said that the company’s twincharger gasoline engine could be on its way out.

The award-winning 1.4L engine, which mixes turbocharging and supercharging, has been said to be too complex and expensive to produce for Volkswagen.

What is Volkswagen going to do now? Engineers for the company said that new turbocharging technology can achieve similar results at a reduced cost.

The twincharger engine, which powers many Volkswagen Group models (including the Polo), won the coveted Engine of the Year award in 2009 and 2010.
