Whether you like it or not, many companies are downsizing to 4-cylinder engines with turbocharging technology. Porsche has confirmed that there is a 4-cylinder gasoline engine currently under development that will power the next-generation Cayman, Boxster and maybe even the 911.
Outgoing CEO R&D Wolfgang Durheimer said at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show that the firm has “a four-cylinder boxer engine under development.”
Porsche originally had plans to introduce a 4-cylinder engine on its forthcoming small roadster, which would share components with the Volkswagen BlueSport and another sister car from Audi.
Reports now suggest that the Porsche has won an internal argument to get its own engine for the car. Insiders say that Porsche is pulling close to 360-hp from a flat 4-cylinder 2.5L turbocharged unit.
