2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Rear-wheel-drive is all about performance and driving dynamics, while all-wheel-drive is all about having control in adverse weather conditions and having some strong off-roading capabilities. It’s one of the decisions that many car shoppers, especially those shopping for a luxury vehicle, face when buying a new car.

So that got us wondering… if you guys are or will be in the market for a new car – what would you choose, RWD or AWD.

Let us know your thoughts in the comments section after the jump.

Rear Wheel Drive every time, especially for a luxury vehicle. AWD is just marketing, unless you’r a serious offroader you’ll never need it. BTW dump the auto ‘box too, stick shift is the way of the future ;)

The only “disadvantage” of AWD vs RWD is the weight of the extra components. A well balanced AWD sports car will more than offset any weight gain with much improved control. The R8 is a good example, granted not the best example given that most AWD sedans are not mid-engined. However, I believe that there is still plenty or room for improving AWD while there is very little room for improving RWD. New materials and weight distribution can still play a significant role in AWD.

I do not see RWD as the performance model and AWD as the all weather traction model. My view is that AWD is performance in all weather, and RWD is performance in ideal weather only. I’ll take AWD even in a southern state over RWD.

The only reason IMO, that RWD and “stick shifting” are the alleged preference among enthusiasts is that old habits are hard to break. We once had to pull our carriages with horses, and we once had to start our engines with a crank in the front of the vehicle… people resist change, much more so if they are passionate about something and will do anything to defend it. The “Joy of Driving” is a subjective measure of an activity for which we all approach it differently. Being able to play in harmony the shift gear and gas pedal is as subjective as claiming that cranking that lever for starting your engine demonstrates your passion for driving. Advancement in technology allows for better shifting and braking without the same old way of doing things, namely, shifting and RWD. Its time to move on into better things.

    Rear-biased AWD all the way!!!

I’ll take AWD. I snowboard a lot and coming to Southern California from Washinton, I’ve learned the CHP makes every car put on chains unless you have AWD at the slightest sight of snow. It’s a pain in the butt to have to put on chains when you know already know how to drive in the snow.

Plus RWD is the worst possible setup for going up in the mountains. Any FWD car is better than RWD in the snow.

RWD is my choice. I live in an area with plenty of snow & hills. My 05 300C, equipped with good winter tires, has no trouble whatsoever. The trac control & ESP do what they are supposed to do. The extra weight, initial cost & greater operating and maintenance costs aren’t even close to being worth it in my case.

    AWD

In Canada, it has to AWD and winter tires, RWD utterly useless in snow.

I will take safety and security any day from my AWD vehicle.
