Not enough gears? ZF introduces 9-speed automatic transmission

Currently, supplier ZF Friedrichshafen AG provides 6-speed and 8-speed transmissions for the Bentley Mulsanne, Hyundai Equus and a couple of other vehicles on the road. The company has announced that it has now developed the world’s first 9-speed automatic transmission for vehicles with a transversely mounted engine.

“Already a leader in technically advanced, fuel-saving multi-speed transmissions for rear-drive vehicles, ZF’s new 9-speed enables significant fuel economy improvements and delivers excellent performance characteristics for front-wheel-drive vehicles,” said Hans-Georg Harter, ZF’s President and CEO.

The new ZF 9-speed automatic transmission will be built at a new manufacturing facility near  Greenville, South Carolina.

When will we see it in application? Word has it that the first vehicle to get the 9-speed transmission will be a Chrysler.
