Paris plans on banning SUVs from the city

If cities in the United States ever decided to ban SUVs, we believe – in fact we are certain – that there would be an uproar from patriotic Americans. However, that is exactly what Paris plans on doing as part of an attempt to curb pollution in the French city.

According to environmental official Denis Baupin, sport utility vehicles and old diesel cars are likely to be targeted in upcoming test restrictions.

Baupin’s advice to anyone who owns an SUV? “Sell it and buy a vehicle that’s compatible with city life,” he says. “I’m sorry, but having a sport utility vehicle in a city makes no sense.”

Paris will be joined by Lyon, Grenoble and Aix-en-Provence in test restrictions on gas-guzzlers in late 2011 or 2012. According to the Environment Ministry, officials in each city are still planning on how the restrictions would work and what types of cars would be affected.
