BYD E6 Electric

Chinese battery and car maker BYD Co. plans to finally begin test-marketing an all-electric battery car in the U.S. next year. The company is also in talks with officials in LA to supple e-buses to the city, which could in turn lead to a manufacturing plant in the city.

The car was supposed to be launched this year, but efforts to make it roomier pushed back the launch date. It is rumored however, that the delay comes as result of fear of potential intellectual-property infringement involving lithium powder.

The company now plans to ship as many as 50 e6 electric cars by the end of next year to fleet customers in Southern California. The car is going to be made available for purchase by private buyers in the US in 2012.

BYD plans to ship at least one test-bus to LA by Q2 2011, and if all goes well, the city will make BYD the official supplier.

Okay, I never thought I would say this in my lifetime, but for a Chinese hatch-back, the design is not that bad, IMHO!
Much better than most of the minivans from the Far East (are you listening, Nissan?)
