Report: Mercedes-Benz planning 320-hp A-Class AMG

Mercedes-Benz BlueZero E-Cell Plus Concept

Mercedes is planning an entrance into the hot hatch-back market with a 320-hp AMG A-Class for 2012. The AMG A-Class will have a turbocharged 2.0L engine and four-wheel drive.

Priced to compete with the Audi RS3, Volkswagen Golf R, and second generation 1-series M Sport hatchback, the AMG A is expected to run around 35k pounds.

Codenamed W176, the new A-Class will be based on Mercedes’ MFA platform – a new unitary construction that is much lighter and more cost-efficient than current design. The body takes on a much lower and more conventional two-box silhouette, overlaid with taut surfacing and styling cues, designed to attract a younger driver than the current A-class. The AMG will feature unique bumpers, pronounced sills, chrome tailpipes and 18-inch wheels.
