More than 3,000 have put down reservation for the Tesla Model S

Tesla Motors Model S electric sedan is scheduled to go into production next year. After going through some crash tests, deliveries of the vehicle will start sometime in 2012. According to Tesla Motors, more than 3,000 people have put down $5,000 reservation fees to get in line for the Model S.

Tesla recently doubled its engineering workforce as it prepares to build the RAV4 EV crossover for Toyota along with 1,500 electric powerplants for Smart and 500 for Mercedes-Benz for its small A-Class.

Tesla currently has 1,400 Tesla Roadsters in countries around the world. All have accumulated over 8 million miles.

Refresher: The Tesla Model S sedan can be recharged from any 120v, 208v or 240v outlet. Depending on which Model S trim-level you chose, the all-electric sedan will provide you with a total range of 160, 230 or 300 miles per charge. 0 to 60 comes in just 5.6 seconds with a top speed that is limited to 130 mph. Pricing is expected to come in at $49,900 after a federal tax credit of $7,500. A $5,000 reservation fee is required but is refundable.
