According to Takata Corp, one of the Lexus LFA suppliers, the $375,000 supercar will be fitted with a new inflatable “airbelt” system for front-seat passengers.
“The SRS Seat Belt Airbag being fitted to the Lexus LFA has an airbag built into the webbing of the seatbelt, which inflates on impact to provide additional protection to the shoulder and critical head area,” said Takata in a statement. “The system is the first of its kind in the world for passenger cars.”
In an event of a frontal crash, the inflatable seat belt expands directly over a wider area of the driver or passenger’s chest. During a side impact, the belt inflates between the shoulder and head to reduce lateral head movement and provide protection from impact with the side window.
The Lexus LFA goes into production this month in Toyota City, Japan – production will be limited to 500 units.
Refresher: Power for the Lexus LFA comes from a 4.8L V10 engine that makes 552-hp with a maximum torque of 354 lb-ft. Mated to a 6-speed Automated Sequential Gearbox, the LFA goes from 0-60 mph with a time of just 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 202 mph.
