Tesla says first initial order for Toyota RAV4 EV is only a few thousand
Toyota yesterday released two teasers of the RAV4 EV that it will debut at the 2010 LA Auto Show. Tesla Motors, which will be providing the electric drivetrain for the electric SUV, says that the initial deal to supply battery packs and motors for the RAV4 EV will only be for a few thousand units.
“This is a test fleet,” Elon Musk, Tesla”s CEO, said in a conference call late yesterday. “The initial phase is in the couple thousand-unit range.”
Toyota owns a $50 million stake in Tesla and agreed to pay another $60 million to develop components for the Toyota RAV4 EV. Toyota has yet to announce where the production for the electric RAV4 will be held or how many it expects to sell when the model hits markets in 2012.
