Chevrolet working on baby SUV based on Aveo

According to a report from AutoCar, Chevrolet is set to enter the baby SUV market with a model based on the Aveo-based 5-seater compact. While details have yet to be finalized, the new car is being engineered and designed by GM Dat in Korea.

The compact SUV, which is scheduled to debut sometime in early 2012, was shown in clay model form at the company’s Korean R&D center. GM executives confirmed that the model will be built on a slightly stretched Aveo platform and could be offered in both all-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive versions.

GM Dat design director Taewon Kim has confirmed that it will have the same family look as the new generation Chevrolet vehicles. However, there will be more attention paid to interior quality, color and trim than other Chevrolet models.

The Chevrolet Aveo made its official debut at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. A sedan Aveo will debut at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show.
