BMW not planning on huge profits from electric-cars… at first

BMW Megacity (Teaser)

BMW’s Megacity electric-cars is scheduled to hit markets in 2013 – however, the automaker isn’t planning on making some green with their first battery-operated vehicle. According to BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer, the German automaker isn’t expecting the Megacity Vehicle and electric-drive to contribute much to profits at first.

“It may be that you don’t earn any money with such technologies during the first product cycle,” he said. “Here, conventional drive has to cross-subsidize the new technology.”

That will hold true even though BMW is planning on charging more for electric-cars in the beginning. “Electric cars will be expensive vehicles in the beginning,” Reithofer said.

The Megacity electric-car will be built at the company’s Leipzig, Germany and will rely heavily on lightweight carbon fiber composite built at a new facility in Moses Lake, Washington.
