Kia’s design boss still wants to do a Mazda MX-5 rival

Kia’s new design boss Peter Schreyer, a former design executive at Audi, is still interested in producing a light-weight sports car that would rival the likes of the Mazda MX-5. Schreyer previously dismissed the possibility of such a vehicle six months ago at the Geneva Motor Show, but in an interview with Drive at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, he was much less definitive.
“Don’t ask me so difficult questions,” he said. “I think it would be great, a car like that. “I think the MX-5 has done a lot for Mazda. There are MX-5 enthusiast clubs and racing and it is an important part of Mazda.”
Schreyer said he is ready to build such a model and that the Mazda MX-5 would be his benchmark.
Rumors have previously said that the model could debut sometime in 2013 and would use a shortened version of the Hyundai Genesis rear-wheel-drive platform.
