Alfa Romeo 8C Spyder

The story of Volkswagen’s interest ing buying Alfa Romeo from Fiat SpA seems to be becoming a story that will pop up here and there for the next couple of months. Last month it was reported that Volkswagen is interested in buying Alfa Romeo from the Italian automaker but Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne clearly said he doesn’t want to sell it and has no plans to do so.

Well, things have gotten down to a more one-on-one level with Volkswagen AG Chairman Ferdinand Piech saying that he has his sights set on Alfa Romeo.

Speaking at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, Piech said “We are patient and have time … you won’t hear anything in the next two years.”

Marchionne reemphasized that he has no intention of selling and said “Let them wait. “If someone comes with 1 billion euros ($1.4 billion)… But I am joking, I have no intention at all of selling Alfa.”

Separately, Volkswagen AG’s group design director Walter de’ Silva says he is ready to create a new Alfa Romeo range.

“If Piech gets Alfa, we are ready,” de’ Silva said at the Paris Motor Show.

Being an Italian-American and an Alfisti I certainly want Alfa to remain 100% Italian; but considering Alfas sales problems over the years it’s great to hear that two major auto companies are determined to have the wonderful brand live on.

Alfa is the brand that Fiat and Marchionne see as its way back into the American market. Selling that potential off now makes no sense for Fiat. With good products and good MARKETING it should do well for Fiat; did I mention good MARKETING?

Fiat is also producing many other truly attractive models in Europe and hopefully Fiat will also add to it’s 500 line with other models in its U.S. future. Can’t wait to officially say welcome back.
