Report: Toyota considering FT-86 RWD sports sedan

There are a lot of rumors surrounding Toyota’s upcoming FT-86 rear-wheel-drive sports car. Last we heard the car was said to be on schedule for a November 2011 launch with prices still starting around the previously mentioned $20,000 target. Design is also expected to be virtually unchanged from the concept.

Sources close to Toyota now say that the company is considering a rear-wheel-drive sports sedan version of the FT-86. The sedan is being looked at as an insurance policy to cover a miss in FT-86 coupe sales. It will also give Toyota the chance of making the most of its rear-wheel-drive platform.
One source even went as far as to say that the sports sedan is a “safety net in case the FT-86 fails.” Another source tells Motor Trend that the sports sedan will also get power from the same 200-hp boxer engine and six-speed manual transmission (or CVT) as the Impreza.
