GM’s OnStar to offer free services to rival Ford’s SYNC, Facebook functionality on the way

GM's OnStar Command Center

FoMoCo’s SYNC system is by far the best in-car communications and connectivity system we’ve ever come across here at egmCarTech. Well, General Motors’ OnStar system will now finally step-up its game and has plans to offer free services starting next year to rival Ford’s SYNC system, sources told Bloomberg.

OnStar, which currently provides accident alerts, directions and vehicle diagnostics, is scheduled to issue an upgraded system this month that will allow vehicles to translate voices messages to texts. Subscribers to OnStar will soon be able to update their Facebook status and have their text-messages be read to them. They can even reply to messages using four preset replies.

The Facebook technology will allow users to verbally update their status on the social media site and listen to their news feed, said Elizabeth Robbins, an OnStar spokeswoman.

We’re scheduled to attend an OnStar even in New York City on Sept. 14 – so we’ll update you on the latest details as soon as possible.
