GM’s new CEO meets with UAW leaders

Dan Akerson - General Motors CEO

On just his second day as GM’s CEO, Daniel Akerson sent a Labor Day greeting to his company’s 80,000 employees, highlighting the fact that he spent some time getting acquainted with UAW president Bob King and head of the union’s GM department, VP Joe Ashton. After the meeting, Akerson let his labor force know that while they may not always see eye to eye, GM will only succeed insofar that management and labor work together.

As part of the bailout process, GM won some concessions from the UAW last year, and with negotiations due between the two organizations next year, King says that he intends to restore some of those concessions as GM, Ford, and Chrysler return to profitability.

Akerson made a point of mentioning to the labor force the fact that he comes from a union family and, knows “on a very personal level the good things that unions can do.”
