2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

Wonderful – here is some more recall news for you guys. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into 37,889 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI sedans after receiving complaints of engine stalling due to fuel system contamination (and you were thinking that diesels are a better bet – we’re being sarcastic).

“The Office of Defects Investigation has received seven complaints on 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI vehicles alleging that while driving and without warning, the engine limped and then stalled almost immediately,” said NHTSA. “A preliminary evaluation has been opened to access the scope, frequency and potential safety consequences associated with the alleged defect.”

We’re pretty sure that Volkswagen, like every other automaker, is working diligently with the NHTSA and will let us know soon enough if a recall will be necessary.

Is it just coincidence or is the government singling out the top import brands. First Toyota, then Hyundai and now Volkswagen. Is it really worth tax payers money to investigate on 7 instances of a non-safety issue on Jettas?

I've put over 10000 miles on my 2010 Golf TDI and I have not had any problem whatsoever with power. This engine is a gem! Probably someone trying to convert it to a cooking oil car or 100% biodiesel. It might have worked on your old rabbit, but this is new technology.

Lots of folks having problems with the hpfp on the 09 and 10 TDIs using regular D2 fuel, not biodiesel. See http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=283913&highlight=hpfp . I've got a 10 Golf TDI myself and am crossing my fingers that VW resolves this issue.

Same here. 10k miles on my 2010 Golf TDI (up to 720 miles on a tank !) and everything is still right.

ease off the paranoia there…maybe it's just that they're covered more in the news thanks to their perceived reputations for quality
