James May hits 257 mph in Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport

Back in 2007, Top Gear’s James May, otherwise known as ‘Captain Slow’ by his colleagues Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson, surprised us when he took the original Bugatti Veyron all the way to its top speed of 253 mph.

Well, James is now back with the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, which now holds the landspeed world record for the fastest production car after hitting a top speed of 267.81 mph.

Obviously it wasn’t May who hit the world record speed – that was done by Bugatti”s official test-driver, Pierre Henri Raphanel, who returned two runs ““ one at 265.3 mph and one at 269.6 mph. During his run, May managed to hit a top speed of 257 mph.

Refresher: The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport makes a total of 1,200-hp (up from 1,001-hp) with a maximum torque of 1,106 lb-ft. Top speed for the production models will be electronically limited to 259 mph to protect the tires. The first five units will feature a special-series of their own with the same configuration as the landspeed record car.
