Report: Porsche 911 Speedster to debut later this year

2010 Porsche 911 Sport Classic

A leaked document showing Porsche’s product plans until the end of 2012 shows that the company is working on a 911 Speedster that will go on sale as early as this year.

Design wise, the new Speedster will keep the silhouette of the classic model while getting some retro-inspired cues from the new 911 Sport Classic and the Boxster Spyder. Much like the Boxster Spyder’s tent-like canvas roof (that seems to be a pain in the butt to take off), the 911 Speedster will have a semi-permanent fabric hood.

Power is expected to come from the same 3.8L flat 6-ctlinder in the 911 Sport Classic. Based on the Carrera S engine, Porsche engineers will extract an extra 17-hp for a total of 402-hp. That should allow the 911 Speedster to go from 0-62 mph in 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 190 mph.

Don’t expect the Porsche 911 Speedster to be a cheap vehicle. To keep it exclusive Porsche plans on building just 100 units.
