According to reports coming out of Europe, Volkswagen’s BlueSport Concept has been given the green light for production. The mid-engined two-seater is very close to production and the final design for the vehicle has been completed.

There are just a couple of kinks to workout before Volkswagen starts developing engineering prototypes for testing. Sources say that the style will stay as close to the original concept, which made its debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

Power for the production Volkswagen BlueSport will come from the concept’s 2.0L diesel engine making 180-hp. Volkswagen says that should allow it to go from 0 to 62 in 6.6 seconds with a top speed of 140 mph.

Insiders say the 1.4L TFSI supercharged engine from the Polo GTI and the 2.0L turbo from the Golf GTI will also be available. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual and V-dub’s dual-clutch DSG.
