2011 Honda Odyssey

Last week, Honda surprised the automotive industry with the debut of the 2011 Odyssey minivan. Ready to hit dealerships this fall with 15 cup holders, the 2011 Honda Odyssey has a lower roofline (-1.6 inches), a wider track (+1.4 inches) and overall improved aerodynamics that help increase fuel-economy.

Speaking of fuel-economy, the 2011 Honda Odyssey won’t be offering a fuel-efficient 4-banger likes its closest rival, the 2011 Toyota Sienna. However, its important to note that Honda says that the Odyssey’s 3.5L V6 engine with 3-mode variable cylinder management helps the Touring Elite model achieve an estimated 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

2011 Toyota Sienna

That’s actually better than the 187-hp 2.7L 4-cylinder Toyota Sienna, which returns an EPA-estimated 19/24 mpg (city/highway).

Both offer a wide range of interior features that are convenient to the average family and both offer outstanding looking exteriors.

The question is… which one would you buy (use your imagination if you aren’t married and don’t have 5 kids).

Let us know in the comments section after the jump.

2011 Honda Odyssey for me for sure… i can never turn away from the Odyssey – to me it is what Toyota Prius is to Hybrid ….just for minivans

  • RotaryLover

Nissan Quest 2011! I know…it's not in the list lol

  • xbpdavis11x

The Sienna is 5000 times better looking than the Odyssey… the shaping of the windows and doors on the sides of the Honda are freaking nastyyy lol

  • nahnsen

The body line around the sliding door and rear side window of the Honda Odyssey really looks bad. I would take the sienna.

    Sienna!

  • Ken

Odyssey, it's the Bmw of minivans. Toyota's are for people who don't care about the driving experience.

  • GBuster

sienna all the way, honda needs to stop this fascination with sci-fi styling.

  • Guest

    Definitely Odyssey

  • It's Me!

    Of course it's the Sienna.

  • Mookyahoo

Definitely the Odyssey is UUGGLLYY, and besides, it's a Hon-duhh. The Sienna puts it to shame both in quality and design.

  • Honda owner

The exterior of the Sienna looks much better the than Honda's. However, Honda's interior is far superior to the Sienna. More importantly than both of these issues is the outrageously high percentage Ody's that have transmission issues. How it remains the #1 selling minivan with this on going issue is a mystery to me. The transmission issue is a deal breaker..Sienna is my pick..and I'm a 20 year Honda owner.

  • Mr. Roboto

you must have bumped your head… when the sienna sped out of control…huh? can we say RECALL

  • Mr. Roboto

the sienna was designed by a bunch of old women, who`s only excitement is the new car smell. the sienna is as exciting as a bunch of dead people

  • C230mike

Sienna hands down. Until Honda gets some new designers, I don't care how great their cars are. They just plain ugly.

  • Lodai

Some would vote for the 2011 Odyssey even it is in fact plain ugly. Some like to play down on Toyota's recall problems. And even those say Toyota copies Honda but just for the look of it, the 2011 Sienna is a clear winner. Odyssey looked better b4 but Sienna looks better now.

  • Lodai

Honda engine reliabilty (longer term) was always a concern to me and I bought a 2011 Sienna over 2010 Odyssey. I owned 2 Honda over the years (1 Accord and 1 Civic). They aren't so bad but both engines had issues after 5 years or so. The recall problem of Toyota was also a concern but they (Honda, Ford,…) all have major recalls anyway on either acceleration or braking issues (i think it's so unfair to equate “recall” with Toyota).

  • Dcaswell16v

I will pass on both and get a Chrysler Town and Country or a VW Routon…. But will hold out until the C-Max from ford this fall….

  • Mookyahoo

Hey Roboto, your Hon-duhh's oil-burning exhaust must have adversely impacted your head. Specifically, your decision-making process. Hon-duhh has had its share of major recalls. Having said that, Toyota will emerge from their recent setback in a better position, and having learned from their past mistake, having even more of a quality product, having this behind them…

  • http://theFleetGuy.weebly.com Stnfrdgrad97

the rear third of the Honda simply doesnt work, from any angle except from the very front where you cant see it at all! still, the sienna is just a way for toyota to kill the whole family rather than just one at a time so perhaps waiting for the Nissan next January is the best option. there is always a Kia van if the need is immediate! ;)

  • PECo

Odyssey for me. I hate the awkward snout on all of the Toyotas (and the Mercedeses, too, for that matter).

  • PECo

Plus, the Sienna has DVD-based navigation, while the Odyssey has a HDD unit.

However, I plan to test drive both minivans before buying one. And I do plan to buy one.

  • varusun

    Odyssey for sure..

  • rickp2010

@Ken, LOL… the BMW of minivan. What an oxymoron. We have a Toyota “mini”van, but we don't pretend it as anything other than a box on wheels with room, safety and convenience for the kids.

  • Tamuyen02

you had a good advised for who want to own a van for a long run !

  • Rohit

the side panel of the ody seems very mercedes R500 like, would have looked even more appealing if it wasnt for that “jagged edge” look. nevertheless, flawless interior and a well-to-do flagship from one of the biggest names in automotive history

  • Guest

I have had both a sienna and an odessey in the past and am now in need of a new minivan. I like the Sienna but am concerned about the seat tracks on the floor. How in the world do I keep the crumbs, dirt and sticky stuff out of those tracks?!

  • Ikaptzan

Sienna used to be a top minivan, but the new Swagger Wagon is not an improvement. If I were buying today I would get the 2010 Odyssey, the 2011 is American designed and manufactured so I am wondering if it will live up to past Odyssey quality. As a proud owner of a 2001, I hope so.

  • Ikaptzan

I can't believe so many of you choose your mini van based on looks, All mini vans are fugly. If it is looks you are most concerned with, you should not be driving a van. Functionality is the most important for a vehicle of this class, and the Odyssey is the clear winner. Consumer Reports, read it.

  • Sienna2008

The 2008 Toyota Sienna I'm driving has a transmission slip problem when slowing down to almost a stop and then stepping lightly on the gas before coming to a stop. It seems to slip until it can engage the first gear and start moving again. The dealer says there isn't anything wrong with it. I'm not so sure.

In the mean time, as long as Honda's transmission doesn't leave you by the side of the road, it has a 5 year warranty doesn't it? After that, I'm on to the next one anyway.

Having said that, the rear end is really turning me off on the 2011 Odyssey. I'll have to wait and see how it drives before making a decision though.

  • TyHi

Ughhhh…I kept hoping Honda would change the front fascia and the side of this monstrosity; but alas, I was hoping in vain. I’ve been in the market for a new mini-van to replace my Mark III conversion minivan and held out for the new Odyssey, but I doubt Honda will make the semi-finals after the test drive. Like the interior and hwy MPG. I really need the city MPG to go higher than the hwy MPG because 80% if my driving is city driving. Ergo, the 24 vs 27 doesn’t matter a whole lot to me.

Toyota beats it out on looks alone…unfortunately, so does the Dodge Caravan which is one homely looking vehicle. Why is this important to me? I have to drive the vehicle, and it’s a lot easier if I don’t heave my guts out as I approach it from the front or sides. Hopefully, not literally. Of course, when I’m on the inside, it looks very well appointed but then I have to deal with all the poor souls heaving their guts out as they watch me go by during my test drive. Not real appealing if I decide to go to a restaurant with my family. Maybe they will include a set of eight blind folds so you can approach the vehicle without seeing it…hahaha.

But, I’ll wait for the new Nissan Quest before I decide. Maybe if Ford gets the C-Max out a bit quicker, I can take it for a test drive as well before settling on one of the minivans.

As for concerns with Toyota quality, their minivans have always done well and were not involved in any of the recalls. No automobile company hasn’t had their share of recalls and quality problems. Maybe the bad press will really tank their sales so I can pick one up with a decent rebate…though not likely.

  • Wchu

I have a 2002 Honda Odyssey. It starts to have the transmission problem that many people have. Now I pick the 2011 Sienna because it looks much better than the new Odyssey. My wife is the main driver for our 2 kids. She like the Sienna look. The 3rd part of the new Odyssey is so ugly that turn me away. I think Sienna will win the minivan battle this time.

  • jiebo

Love the Sienna’s better looks and quiter interior.

Bold and as exciting as a minivan can be…I just drove them both — Sienna nice and comfortable and fairly utilitarian. However, ODYSSEY is by far my choice.
Some in-depth thought for the interieror style and soooo functional! The look of the Odyssey will be the future of the segment! Not for everyone, but then again not everyone needs the function of a “box on wheels”.

Toyota sienna all the way, the sienna has an awd option and it looks soo much better than this new odyssey. Toyota and Honda both have similar reliability and quality imo But I just dont know what happened to the new oddysey but it looks like they welded 2 seperate vans together and it looks strange…. i predict that although it will sell ok because loyal customers, this will still be the worst selling odyssey Honda has ever made, and at a bad time since Toyota has a great alternative.

  • Cj-mac

had 2007 sienna. total piece of junk! sliding door issues, navigation issues, speaker shorts, run flat tire issues.only had it 6 months. toyota was less than helpful. will never own one again! bought 2007 gmc yukon xl denali, now has 60,000 on it NO PROBLEMS. Just bought 2011 oddysey in part because of the way it looks(not like a minivan). when i drove it I was blown away by the handeling and ride. i can only speak about the 2011 oddysey and i say buy it you will be thrilled. it’s terrific in every aspect. I think i even like it better than my denali, and it was 1/2 the price!!

  • Gmark

    Odyssey superior in all areas.

  • Tanya

I have a 2006 Odyssey and LOVE it! I was waiting for the 2011 Odyssey to come out so I could upgrade. I really don’t like the bodystyle at all. I’m not a fan of the Sienna either. I guess I’ll just keep what I have. Besides, nine more months and I won’t have a car payment, so that’s a plus. :)

  • Livinia

I bought the 2011 Honday Odyssey EX-L I actually LIKE the new bodystyle (black, it looks modern) and it made a mini-van driver out of me (the ultimate hater).

  • Livinia

Have you sat in the back of a VW Routon? There is NO legroom at all.

I just bought the AWD Sienna Limited yesterday…it drives really nice and has any and all features you can think of…someone here mentioned the tracks for the seats and dirt…come on, that’s not a problem. You could clean these quite easily, if necessary…

The third row is NOT auto, even in the limited…that’s fine…it’s super simple to drop the seats down…one hand is all you need…Honda obviously copied this design…also, the second row seats come out easy enough…need to be decently strong though as the seats have some weight to them.

As far as looks, I thought the Odyssey was simply horrible looking…who the heck would want to sit in that thing? It really looks like three separate designs were welded together…it’s really that ugly…go and look at one in person…try to convince yourself that you’re looking at a marvel of design…it’s like they rushed to get this thing to market and forget to make it look even half good…yuck!

As far as performance, functionality, etc…they’ll both suffice, but only the Sienna has AWD..that’s the kicker for me…coming out of a Lexus SUV, I wanted to keep the AWD feel…plus, it’s a little faster…the drive is not numb, it’s got a nice feel to it…it’s responsive and has crisp acceleration…I don’t know the numbers off the top of my head, but the Sienna feels faster than the Odyssey, esp. the AWD, which is quicker and more responsive…oh, as far as those run flats go…who the heck cares? They ride just fine…are they more expensive…yes…can you get a blowout, no…you want safety, you got it…enough said!

What else…oh, the 10 speaker system is great….better than my Lexus stock, by far…the DVD player is nice and functional…the navi gets the job done…I really can’t find many negatives about the Sienna…my iphone plays bluetooth music so no need to plug an ipod in…very nice…the bluetooth phone setup is easy as can be…very well thought out all the way through…

Go ahead and test drive both…the Odyssey will feel a bit more like a car, but the Sienna will win with looks…if you can get over the horrid Odyssey chop-shop look, then you’re good to go. The Odyssey is a great vehicle…Honda makes a good product…however, if you want a nice looking minivan that does more than you’ll ever need it to do, and has the added feature of AWD (with select models) and is really a lot better looking, there is no better option than the Sienna.

Oh, one more thing…the parking sensors on the Sienna cannot be beat…you get close to anything and you’ll know it…great feature…I also opted for the HID lights…don’t leave home without these…this is a great upgrade…much more light projected!

I can assure you that if you get a Limited Sienna AWD, you will be very happy…especially when you park next to the ugly as sin Odyssey in a parking lot…I’m sure many will still say that the Odyssey is a better vehicle…whatever…they’re both very good…one look at the Odyssey, though, and you’ll be pricing out the Sienna…go test both and you’ll see what I mean…

  • Umahni

Agreed! I also bought the 2011 Touring in black and it looks sleek and athletic in black. I have had several people come up tome and comment on the car and ALL the comments were positive. The new design is a little odd and different but it takes getting used to. The Odyssey is just a great van overall. I had a 2006 Odyssey and loved it too. The new Sienna does look nice on the outside, but it still looks more like a mini van. I think Honda took a risk with the new design but this is there way to try and stand out from the mini van pack. I actually had a R class Mercedes owner comment on my new van and she was so impressed with the look of it and that it seats 8 that she was going to go and buy the Touring Elite. I think the new Odyssey looks really sleek and classy, (looks best in black). It may not be for everyone so just buy what suites you and your family and don’t judge either car until you see them in person and at least taken them for a test drive.

  • Mic

I love the look of the new Odyssey. I think it is likely to appeal more to people like myself who don’t like the mini-van look.

  • adv

i just got a oddessy elite. how do i know if my headlights are hid lights. they are not blue on or off. they seam bright but does not look like anything special. window sticker says i have them. just wanted to make sure the right ones were put in. does anyone know how to tell.

  • Veganhealth

Consumer Reports places Sienna ahead of Odyssey in reliability. Look a the last decade of problems owners have had with the Odyssey v. the Sienna.

  • Just saying

I live in the the Northeast – we tried to hold off going the minivan route for as long as possible. Our neighbors bought an odyssey last year, however after 1 winter they have now had 2 accidents due to the snow so that now they wont take it out when its either snowing or there is snow in the forecast. We bought our Sienna AWD limited 3 years ago and have had zero problems in snow or with maintenance. However it eats more gas and the tires wear faster (due to being a run flat tire) I feel a lot easier knowing the Sienna AWD handles well in the snow when my wife is out driving the kids around.
