2011 Volkswagen Jetta

Besides the 15-cup holder 2011 Honda Odyssey, the biggest debut this week was the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta. Said to look like the poor man’s Audi A4, the Volkswagen Jetta gets a totally new exterior for 2011 and some quality interior upgrades as well.

Nonetheless, Volkswagen says prices will start around $16,000 (official prices to be announced closer to launch date) and that the new Jetta also offers the best-in-class rear legroom, premium interior and features.

Basically it’s better in every way – however, since you guys are the shopper, we were wondering what you think of the 2011 Jetta. Do you like it? Hate it? Do you see yourself buying it over other cars in the segment including the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Focus and such.

    boring, …. just boring.

  • Mogar

agreed, it will blend in very effectively in traffic

  • CARLover

I am not a big fan of the new look. I would have gone sportier like Mazda has with their recent models. This looks just plain boring!

  • Bumblefoot

Aside from it being longer, I like it. I think it looks better than the last generation, and looks a little like the concept coupe hybrid they showed. I'll still drive my 2010 Golf TDI.
I've heard that VW is thinking about a Jetta R. That would be nice. 265hp all wheel drive. That would be sweet, but either way….I think this is a nice design

  • Mclutes

I think the new Jetta should is nice, but all my friends who love the Jetta all say they love the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generations the best. If only they could bring back that formula for styling it wouldn't matter if it boring or not. Once you call it a GLI or give it a spoiler its not so boring any more

  • Pat

I really like it a lot. Volkswagen definitely gets overlooked in terms of engineering and quality… they are probably the best in terms of mass automakers

  • paulg

I like it. It looks like a baby Audi A4. The C pillar is very elegant. But what happened to the CC coupe. That needs to happen.

  • Shaymart

    One word. Nebulous

  • Christiamo

Rear end is like an Audi A4, front end very unattractive! Overall not a bad car!

  • Ulysses

Naturally I'd need to see the car in the flesh before passing final judgement but while it appears to be an improvement over the previous model iteration in some ways, it is nonetheless generic looking verging on boring to my eye and lacks character. I lament that VW management has decided to follow the Japanese brands and grow the car while making it visually bland.

Will this thing also be sold in Europe as the Bora? Methinks and mehopes not!

  • Dnnsgrrtt

I like it. Style-wise, I think its a vast improvement over the previous model. Sure it is somewhat “generic”; I think they have to be to retain competitiveness with Japan…can't argue with the Japanese import sales numbers. It still retains enough class and Euro-styling that I'll pick it over the Japanese offerings though. I was going to get a 2010 TDI, but I'll have to wait and see this one in person first…either way I should get a good deal!

  • jetta??

Hate the back, fronts is ok. Love the interior

  • Mr Man

This looks so bland! Absolutely no character at all :(

  • Tom

Personally I do not like it at all. Lets be honest, it resembles an american Ford, rather than the German automobile we have come to love and respect. Obvious downgrade in my opinion. Interior is still amazing. Exterior, not so much. A little dissappointed.

  • Brand Hijack

It boggles the mind that Volkswagen has introduced a car which is so completely out of touch with the US market. They’ve alienated their core market by introducing this car and as a result, the brand itself has lost it’s meaning. Brand equity takes a long time for a company to build. In terms of Volkswagen’s perceptual value in the US market, the new Jetta is more than just a bad car. It’s a catastophy.

  • Bexuberant

I paid off my 2008 Jetta this past July. I was thinking of trading it in for the 2011 but after seeing what they’ve done to one of my favorite models of Volkswagen I’d rather keep my older version. Despite my car now being 3 years old, I think it’s a much better car than the brand new ones being offered today. I’m a little disappointed, compromising brand integrity is never a good thing.

  • Pascalstimp

Boring! The Toyota Corrolla clone was bad, but this Ford Focus rip-off is the worst. Jetta drivers are unique, and the styling of the 2011 model is most definitely not.

  • Annoyed

I’ve decided to walk away from VW. This car has cheapened the image of the brand for me.

  • TomG

My last car was a 2008 VW Jetta w/ 2.5L and I loved the torque to gas mileage ratio. I had the drop-in K&N airfilter and the car had plenty of power for me. I just got the 2011 Jetta and I love it! It still has the quiet cabin with virtually no road noise, smooth ride and great handling on corners, with virtually no body roll. I loved the new rear design and how it looks similar to the Audi A4 and I love the heated leather seats that heat your back as well (I got the convenience package with blue tooth, satellite radio, heated seats, etc). The few things I don’t like are the front grill ( My Jetta is black because I didn’t think the black grill looked as bad with a black car), I don’t like the change to the arm rest (much too low and no longer adjustable), there is no button to defeat the ESP traction control any longer, no grocery bag hook in the trunk. The computer still needs to learn my faster driving habits and I think I’ll need another K&N drop-in filter since there is a noticeable lag when I first take-off. Overall, I feel like I’m driving a $36,000 car for $21,000.

Looks like a Focus. Way to cheapen out the Jetta VW. End of story.

  • volvogal78

How the heck does this new car look like a Ford Focus?  Have any of you actually seen the new Jetta model in person (inside and out) before passing your final judgments?  Perhaps if you squint a little and cover one eye….tilt your head just smidge… and hop up and down on one leg, it MIGHT resemble a Ford?  Come on, get real!  If anything, the new ’11 Jetta has borrowed a few features from its Audi cousin, the A4, which is a definite improvement over its Corolla-styled predecessor.  After reading these comments, (such as, “it’s cheap,” or “it’s a catastrophe,” and my personal favorite, “I’ve decided to walk away from VW”), I feel as though you VW fanatics have nothing to do but complain about the smallest little details.  One thing I do agree with you all about, is that pretentiousness of this caliber does indeed deserve a more expensive car, which will save you the trouble of telling everyone you’re a d-bag.

I bought yesterday a VW Jetta 2011, very nice and smooth car, it has a manual transmission and i love it, coming from a Jeep Cherokee XJ manual is a big change i can tell you right now,
    Wooww !
what a smooth ride, you do not hear almost anything in the cabin, i struggle to hear the engine noise when should i change the gears ( i use to hear that very well in the Jeep ) i still need to adjust to the new car, but i can comment on the way it handles, very sharp, very responsive, no delays and very versatile, the folding rear back seats !!! bonus is the square gap for the Skys in the trunk,
Also i want to mention the very generous back seat ! More like a limo style back seat, also the car volume is amazing, i parked near a 2003 VW Jetta one of my neighbourgs and i looks by 1/3 larger for the same great fuel economy !
It is a very good buy !
    Do not Hesitate !
    Cheers

This price is ideal for most of the inhabitants of the Earth. For this price you get a fairly good trade-off from VW. It’s desing is way too cool, if I would have the money to buy it as new, I would surely would. That is, without having to rely on loans of course.
