Production Toyota FT-86 to be badged FR-S?

Toyota FT-86 Concept

Recent Toyota trademark filings in the United States and Canada suggest that the production name of the Toyota FT-86 Concept will be FR-S. Many have speculated that the FR-S name stands for Front-engine, Rear-wheel-drive, Sports cars – not exactly an exciting name so we guess FR-S doesn’t sound so bad.

Both filings were completed on May 27, 2010 under the “Automobiles and structural parts thereof” category.

Sales of the Toyota FT-86, or FR-S, are expected to start sometime in late 2011 in the United States. Japan sales are expected to start early 2011.
