Sources: 3-cylinder BMW 1-Series will be sporty

2010 BMW 1-Series

We already know for sometime now that BMW is working on a front-wheel-drive 1-Series that will be powered by a 4-cylinder as well as a 3-cylinder engine. However, will these new entry-level 1-Series models be sporty?

According to insiders, the 3-cylinder 1-Series is not considered as an “entry-level unit. It’s a serious, refined, sporting engine with great CO2 figures.”

The engine will be based on BMW’s new 500cc-per-cylinder design and uses direct injection and turbocharging. Sources say that the car will also be engineered to deal with the noise and vibration of a 3-cylinder engine.

Guess we’ll have to wait and find out – however, we doubt that the 3-cylinder units will come to the United States.
