Not a bad decision: GM’s Corvette gift to Galarraga was worth nearly $9 million in media exposure

GM NA President Mark Reuss awards Armado Galarraga Chevrolet Corvette Convertible

General Motors’ recent decision to award a $53,000 Corvette Convertible to Detroit Tigers pitchers Armando Galarraga has been seen as very controversial by critics. However, according to a study by Joyce Julius & Associates Inc., the Corvette giveaway was worth $8.9 million in media exposure value for the Detroit automaker.

The firm said that the gift of a Corvette to Galarraga was shown in 714 television programs (worth nearly $1 million in exposure) and showed up on 151,000 publications (worth another $7.9 million).

The report comes after GM faced criticism for the highly publicized gift, which was inevitable.

“Until GM has repaid the taxpayers in full for the money they have borrowed, every action that GM takes should advance them in that direction,” Kurt Bardella, a spokesman for U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., told the New York Times on June 4.
