Audi has started testing its R8 based e-tron concept on public roads as it kicks off the development program for the all-electric, all-wheel-drive supercar. Audi will build only 1,000 units of the R8 e-tron, which will go on sale in select markets by the end of 2012 (U.S. is one of them).

Audi has said nothing on pricing for the R8 e-tron, but it will definitely cost more than the V8 R8 coupe, which sells for $114,200 in the U.S.

The production of the R8 e-tron marks the first steps for Audi to launch a higher volume of e-tron badged electric-vehicles.

Refresher: The Audi e-tron concept is powered by four electric motors ““ two each at the front and rear axles ““ producing 313-hp and a maximum torque of 3,319 lb-ft of torque (501.5 lb-ft in real world terms). 0 to 62 mph comes in 4.8 seconds with a top speed of 124 mph. Driving range equals 154 miles on a full charge.
