Hybrid sales soar in May

Hybrid cars soared past the overall market in sales for the month of May, lead as usual, by the Toyota Prius and Ford Fusion hybrid. These numbers represent the best posted by hybrids since last August, when $4-per-gallon gasoline spurred monthly sales of 38,701 units. Though still impressive, May”s numbers were more modest; 27,800 units, which represents an 18.7% jump from April. Sales of conventionally powered vehicles were up 12.5% from May to April.

Though Toyota vehicles accounted for over 73% of hybrid sales, with the Prius alone accounting for 51% of total hybrid sales, there were some strong showings by some other manufacturers. The Nissan Altima hybrid for instance sold 1,167 units, up from 330 the month previous, and the Ford Fusion hybrid is showing consistent and steady growth, having sold 64% more month-to-month and 32% more year-to-year. The Fusion sits safely in second place as far as hybrid sales are concerned, being outsold by only the Prius.
