Report: BMW Megacity could spawn an electric sports car
BMW’s first series-production electric-drive model will hit the markets in 2013 with the new Megacity Vehicle. According to marketing boss Ian Robertson, the new model may spawn many more variants including a new EV sports car. We believe that makes sense since the company will be launching the Megacity under a new sub-brand of BMW.
Robertson said that the Megacity won’t be restricted to “just one format” and that the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept shows the possibility of a new electric sports car. However, AutoCar reports that the final production version would be somewhat different.
“We”re in the final stages of picking a name,” Robertson said, “but we want it to become a strong sub-brand like we have with M.”
If you’re wondering about the price of the Megacity, reports suggest that the model will not be cheap. The cost development and low sales targets will mean that it’ll likely have a premium price.
Refresher: Power for the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics comes from a 163-hp 1.5L 3-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and two electric-motors. That allows for a total of 356-hp and a peak torque of 590 lb-ft. 0-62 mph come in 4.8 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph. Fuel-economy is estimated at 63 mpg while in EV mode, the concept can provide 31 miles of zero-emissions driving.
