Infiniti planning two new model variations before the end of 2010

There has been a lot of speculation recently as to what Infiniti’s future product plans are. While we already know about an upcoming electric-model based on the Nissan LEAF, Infiniti released a sketch of two new models that it will debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d”Elegance event in August.

Sources say that Infiniti is planning two new model variations this year in an effort to expand its product offerings without adding body styles. One of the two is expected to involve the direct-injected turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that will debut in the U.S. this year on the new Nissan Juke crossover.

Ben Poore, vice president of the Infiniti business unit in the U.S., told journalists last week that one of two offerings will be a “performance-oriented” model. Sources said Poore is referring to a new engine option, not an all-new model. It was reported last week that Nissan Motor Co. has filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for trademark protection of the names “IPL” and “Infiniti Performance Line”

The second model is going to be a product for the “volume segment.”

“It expands our footprint into an area where we’ve never played before,” Poore said.

The two models are expected to debut before the Infiniti M35 Hybrid which will debut early next year.
