2010 Mercury Milan

If you guys haven’t heard already, there are reports going around that Ford Motor Company executives are working on a plan to kill the Mercury brand. The plan will be presented to directors in July. Sales of the brand have dropped 74 percent since 2000 and that leads us to believe that no one really cares to even consider the brand while shopping for a new car. Are we wrong? Let us know whether or not you would consider Mercury when shopping for a new vehicle and if you really care that the future may not have any Mercury cars on the roads.

For those of you wondering, Mercury currently offers only four models with the Milan (which is based on the Ford Fusion) being the only one to get a total redesign since God knows when. Other than that you have the Mountaineer, Mariner and the Grand Marquis.

Let us know your thoughts in the comments section after the jump.

To be honest I am a little saddened that Mercury is being killed off… my family has been driving Mercurys for years, my great-grandfather swore by Mercurys, me and my mom both drive Sables as does my grandma, they are big parts of my family and it's a little weird there won't be Mercury anymore

My dad owned the Grand Marquis for two model years straight back in 1999. I honestly don't care for the brand – but he might.

  • Pat

He has since become a fan of SUVs and currently drives the BMW X5 – so i doubt he's missing Mercury that much

I would love to buy a Mercury.. problem is, they already stopped making them. What they are making is warmed over versions of lackluster Fords. While many are better looking in the Mercury trim, nothing has done to set them apart from the lower priced Fords. When shopping for my first new car 9 years ago, my first test drive was of the Mercury Marauder. I loved the concept of the car. Full sized, room for 5 adults, vacation sized trunk, and a V8 engine. The test drive was disappointing. While it did accelerate nicely for a full sized car, it was not impressive. For 10 grand more than a base model, I expected to at least chirp the tires on the 1-2 shift. In days gone past, Mercury had a performance image. The original Marauder was a force to be reckoned with. The original Cougar was a Mustang with a standard V8 and a nicer ride. The Eliminator turned the Cougar into a regular animal. Those are the Mercury’s I want to buy. Suppose I'm alone, as now a days, performance is a bad word. But since you’re asking me, I say bring back the exciting cars people can get passionate about. Create a Mustang based Cougar. Make a full sized car with the new 5.0 “Coyote” engine in it. Make a convertible. Give the brand an identity, and the buyers will follow.

I like em. A bit nicer trim packages than the Ford's.I have a Milan (my third) and a Mariner.

Honestly I have to say at this moment Mercury is bring the brand down as a whole. The cars are nothing special, they are odd copies of the ford line.

I would have much preferred Ford killed Mercury but somehow managed to keep Volvo…

Mercury is like GMC, get rid of it.

I don't care. Mercury seems like just a complete rebading of Ford. Besides, Mercury hasnt been in Canada since the 90's so doesnt affect us up here.

Nope, the Mercury nameplate ceased to exist as a viable brand decades ago. Mostly re-badged Fords, so what's the point? Last interesting Mercury I remember was the Canadian version of a 1962 Mercury Comet, which my uncle drove when he (along with his family) was posted to Toronto from Long Beach to supervise wing production for the DC-9 jetliner at a DeHavilland Aircraft facility. Anybody recall what the Comet was named in Canada?

It's sad to see Mercury join Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Plymouth in the nameplate graveyard, but it's just wasting resources at Ford right now. If there was any chance that Mercury might survive, Ford should reposition the brand to be a domestic competitor to Scion. Cheap, somewhat sporty cars for the base entry-level new car buyer. Sadly, this will not be the case, and Mercury will disolve, and take the Ranger with it.

@RaGgaMuffiN….the car you are thinking of is the Frontenac, based on the Falcon.

Mercury is an answer to a question that was never asked. Time to say buh-bye!
