Mahindra Pikup

Those who were eagerly awaiting the American launch of India”s Mahindra small diesel pickup truck will have to continue to wait; the date has been pushed back yet again from this spring to December of 2010.

Pawan Goenka, company president of automotive operations, reaffirmed that the TR20 and TR40 have completed all federal testing requirements, but are awaiting EPA certification before they can be sold in the U.S. This postponement represents the fourth anticipated launch date.

Goenka aims to capture between 5% and 7% of the U.S. small truck market by the end of the first year, and is still looking to partner with a company to manufacture its trucks domestically by the end of 2011. Starting MSRP for the trucks is expected to be around $22,000.

India should file a complaint that the US is blocking free trade and keeping the Mahindra truck from hitting the market.

Everyone's waiting for it and GM/Ford/Chrysler knows it. We've been wanting a 4 cylinder diesel truck for decades.

This is great news that they seem to be committed to a launch despite the delay. I’m sure this is a big deal for Mahindra – entering the competitive US market is no joke. Last thing they want is to botch up a critical launch. The positives of this truck are too big — way more payload, way better fuel economy than anything else out there. I can’t wait for it to show up so I can check it out.
