Next-generation BMW X3 could get ActiveHybrid variant

2009 BMW X3

According to sources, the BMW X3 prototype that caused a bomb scare last week in NYC was apparently a hybrid version of the upcoming 2011 X3. The model could be the first small BMW hybrid to make it into production.

Insiders say that the ActiveHybrid X3 model will be joined by a 204-hp 2.0L diesel engine and the new 3.0L twin-scroll turbocharged from the new 335i. A 4-cylinder gasoline and diesel option is also being considered.

According to AutoExpress, the ActiveHybrid X6‘s 4.4L V8 engine mated to a pair of electric-motors technology can easily be altered to work with smaller engines in the X3 lineup.
