It was recently reported that the development cost involved with the upcoming Toyota/Subaru rear-wheel-drive sports coupe may result in a more expensive vehicle than originally estimated. When the Toyota FT-86 Concept made its debut at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, company executives said that they are aiming for an entry-level price of around $20,000.
So what happens when you can’t meet your price goal? According to sources, Toyota is apparently working on a smaller, milder version of the FT-86 that could be $5,000 less expensive than the model that will hit showrooms at the end of 2011.
The baby FT-86 will measure about 150 inches in overall length and will be powered by Toyota’s 1.5L inline 4-cylinder engine making 109-hp. According to Road&Track, it will feature a front-engine/rear drive layout.
