It was reported over the weekend that Hyundai recently held a research clinic group with pickup customers in California and Texas using a Ram 1500 customized with a Hyundai-style grille and interior upgrades. According to a new report by Reuters, sources say that Hyundai is pitching a partnership to Chrysler Group where it will ask the Auburn Hills automaker to build a pickup based on the Ram truck platform.
Two sources said that Chrysler’s CEO, Sergio Marchionne, rejected Hyundai’s original offer in February and said that the company needs to concentrate on its turnaround plan under Fiat SpA. However, Hyundai continues to look at truck options and could go back to Chrysler.
If Chrysler accepts the partnership it could allow the automaker to expand production and reduce costs for the Ram, the No.3 ranking pickup by sales.
