Porsche and Volkswagen looking to share more technical research, platforms

Volkswagen and Porsche currently share a platform for the Touareg and the Cayenne

Currently, Volkswagen and Porsche already share a platform for the Volkswagen Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne SUVs. According to Detlev von Platen, CEO of Porsche Cars North America, Porsche and its new owner Volkswagen AG are now looking to create a more technical partnership that will include vehicle platform sharing.

von Platen said that a decision will be made within the next six months but plans would not be announced until much later.

“It makes sense to think about some synergies in terms of research and development, and these discussions are taking place at the moment with VW,” said von Platen.

Porsche is looking for ways to cut its fleet fuel-economy to meet tougher standards from U.S. fuel-economy regulators. It is also looking to increase worldwide sales to 150,000 units from 75,000 units last year.

Meeting that growth target “would require products that we don’t have today,” von Platen said.
