2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS

After a couple of leaks here and there, the 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS has finally been revealed. The new 911 GT2 RS will make its world debut in August at the Moscow Auto Show and will go on sale in the U.S. in October with a starting price tag of $245,000.

Power comes from a 3.6L flat six with twin, variable-geometry turbochargers allowing for a total of 620-hp, up from the 530-hp on the outgoing GT2. Weight has been cut by 154 pounds for a total of 3,020 pounds, allowing the car to have a power-to-weight ratio of just 4.9 lbs per horsepower. Mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, the 2011 911 GT2 RS goes from 0-60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and keeps going until it hits 205 mph. Stopping power comes from Porsche Composite Ceramic Brakes (PCCB).

Porsche says that the car lapped the Nurburgring Nordschleife in 7:18, beating the Corvette ZR1 around the famous German track. With that in mind, Porsche says that the 911 GT2 RS is the “fastest and most powerful road-going sports car ever built in the history of Porsche.”

Porsche will limit production of the 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS to just 500 units.

90 More Horsepower, 154 lbs Less Filling
The latest 911 is the fastest and most powerful road-going sports car ever built in the history of Porsche. With horsepower (hp) up by 90 and weight down by 154 lbs (70 kilograms) in comparison with the previous 911 GT2, the new 911 GT2 RS has a power-to-weight ratio of just 4.9 lbs (2.21 kg) per horsepower, by far the best power/weight ratio in its class. These are the ideal ingredients for an ultra-high-performance sports car with supreme agility and truly blistering performance on the road. Perfectly illustrating Porsche Intelligent Performance, the 2011 GT2 RS achieves a reduction of approximately 5 percent for both fuel consumption and CO2 emission reduction when compared with the previous 911 GT2.

The 3.6 liter six-cylinder boxer engine features two variable turbine geometry turbochargers and provides power to the rear wheels exclusively through a six-speed manual gearbox. Equally impressive stopping power comes from Porsche Composite Ceramic Brakes (PCCB).

Unique Tires, One of a Kind Performance
New tires were specifically developed for the 911 GT2 RS and measure 245/35 ZR 19 at the front and 325/30 ZR 19 at the rear, delivering cornering performance to match the straight-line speed. Extreme cornering dynamics are ensured by the setup of the springs, Porsche Adaptive Suspension Management (PASM), unique anti-roll bars, specific engine mounts and recalibrated Porsche Stability Management (PSM), whose stability and traction control functions can be switched off individually.

The combined effect of these developments is evident on the racetrack. In fact, the ultimate 911 accelerates from 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, boasts a top-track speed of 205 mph and laps the famed Nürburgring-Nordschleife racetrack in just 7 minutes and 18 seconds.

Carbon Fiber, Limited Production
In its looks, the new 911 GT2 RS stands out clearly from the other 911 models through the lavish use of carbon-fiber-reinforced (CFR) components with a matt-black surface finish, even wider wheels (including flared wheel arches at the front), new light-alloy wheels with central locking and “GT2 RS” model designations on the doors and rear lid. Matte-finish carbon also graces the redesigned front spoiler lip and the 3/8th of an inch (10 mm) taller rear spoiler lip ““ which both enhance aerodynamics and provide extra downforce.

The interior of the 911 GT2 RS also exudes sporting performance in virtually every detail. Lightweight two-piece bucket seats made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic are standard, as are lightweight door panels with fabric straps instead of traditional door handles. The basic interior color is black, which contrasts with red elements, such as the seat center sections, the roof lining and segments of the steering wheel rim. The gearshift and handbrake lever are also finished in red alcantara.

Limited to just 500 units worldwide, the 911 GT2 RS will be available in the U.S. October 2010 and will have a MSRP of $245.000. The GT2 RS is making its world debut at the Moscow Auto Show on August 25th 2010.

    Excellent time, although I fear it will be short lived as Dodge is going to run the 2010 Viper ACR with the revised 5th gear ratio around the ring and they are looking for a 7:12 or less.

    Still, good job Porsche!!

    Cool…. Where did you hear this? Any links? I have no doubt the revised ACR could achieve such a time, but I didn't realize it was going to run the 'Ring again…

    now that's freakin' impressive!

    as for the Viper, i wouldn't really consider it in the same class as the GT2 RS and ZR1. the ACR is much closer to a pure-bred race car without AC, radio, leather seats, etc. Anyone can strip down their high performance car and turn it into a race car. it takes true engineering to make it able to be a daily driver as well. don't get me wrong it is an awesome car, but in my book its not a “road-going” car.

    Ummm, the 2008 – 2010 Viper ACR does have leather seats. As well as A/C. And even an audio system if you don't opt for the “Hardcore” package. Get your facts straight before posting. The “Hard Core” package shaves an additional 40 pounds from the ACR's curb weight. It deletes the audio system, underhood sound deadening material and trunk carpeting. Door panels are also replaced with carbon fiber and a lap timer can added where the audio system usually resides. But even this has leather seats + A/C. This is not to imply the Viper ACR is a great daily driver, but I suspect the 997 GT2 RS will not be either. I know the 996 GT2 was not…. Both cars are great track weapons that are fun on the street for occasional (a few days a week) use. IMHO, the great part about the 2010 ACR is it cost about 1/3 (when all is said and done after markup + taxes) than the GT2 RS and is faster (this will be proven once the revised 2010 model is tested). A pretty amazing feat if you ask me….

    point taken, didnt realize there were that many options on the ACR. every review i've seen for the ACR has had leather bucket race seats, and a very bare dash, not my idea of a comfortable commuting position. my point about ring lap times was the fact that the ACR is not a dual purpose car and therefore should not be compared to the likes of the ZR1 or GT-R for that matter. i too hope that the 2010 model can go up against the RS and blow it out of the water in the near future

    That is a good looking car. But if I had $245k I wouldn't buy the 911 or any other Porsce.

    Yes, the ZR1 and GTR are more user friendly on the street than the ACR. But you'd be surprised, the ACR is VERY street-able. It's just something you probably won't want to drive everyday, but a couple of times a week is fine. The GT2 RS? Not so sure… That is the car I was referring in my previous post, not the ZR1 or GTR. It's seats are even more aggressive than the ACR's, which are no different than the standard Viper. Leather bucket seats. Not to mention high boost Turbo in the RWD platform can be tricky. Having rear weigh bias makes this even worse (rear engine). Not knocking the GT2 RS, just pointing out a few things… I'm sure it is an awesome car, as it should be for the price.

    What Porsche doesn't tell you is that they do a 'flying start' whereas the ZR-1 does the start from a standstill at the 'Ring.
