Next-generation BMW X3 prototype causes bomb scare outside NYC museum

American Museum of Natural History in NYC

A camouflaged BMW prototype caused a bomb scare on the Upper West Side yesterday after the black and white vehicle with a tarp over it was left running while the driver enjoyed a picnic with his girlfriend.

Apparently a passer-by (who is not at all familiar with the automotive world, spy shots or prototypes) called the police when he noticed the unusual BMW SUV parked in front of the main entrance to the Museum of Natural History on Central Park West. For the next several hours the NYPD bomb squad examined the vehicle and smashed the rear and side passenger windows of the vehicle. Authorities said they were surprised to see that the car’s interior was also covered with tarp.

Police eventually identified the driver of the car as Martin Birkmann, a BMW brand manager and test driver. The prototype, which had New Jersey plates, appeared to be a new version of the BMW X3.

Birkmann said that he accidentally pressed the wrong button when leaving his car when trying to remotely shut off his engine.

Oh well, at least we know that the next-generation BMW X3 will have a remote start option.
