FoMoCo today gave a sneak peek at the next-generation Ford Explorer to a group of dealers, which may now arrive as a 2012 model year. So far, we’ve been referring to the next-generation Explorer as a 2011 model year vehicle, but dealers who attended the meeting today said that Ford told them that it was undecided whether the Explorer will be a 2011 or a 2012 model year.
No official reason was given for the indecision. To qualify as a 2012 model, Ford would have to wait until Jan. 1 to sell the SUV.
Dealers who got to see the new Ford Explorer today said it is rounder than the current model and it resembles a larger version of the new Ford Edge crossover.
The new Ford Explorer will be share a unibody platform with the 2010 Ford Taurus. Ford plans to offer front- and all-wheel-drive models and has promised to offer a 2.0L 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine. 6-cylinder options will be available as well.
