Mercedes-Benz working on CLS estate to compete with 5-Series Gran Turismo

Mercedes-Benz plans on offering a shooting brake version of its new CLS, which will be based on the F800 Style Concept that made its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. According to AutoCar, the model will make its concept debut at the 2010 Beijing Motor Show next month, with sales to begin around 2012.

The Mercedes-Benz CLS Estate is part of the Stuttgart automaker’s plans to diversify its lineup with range of niche cars to appeal to younger customers. The CLS Estate will also give Mercedes-Benz buyers an alternative to the recently introduced BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo.

“Traditional rules don”t apply any more. Established segments are becoming increasingly fragmented,” an insider told AutoCar.

The Mercedes-Benz CLS Estate will share its front fascia with the CLS sedan, but from the B-pillar backwards it receives its own styling.
