While this is the first Tata Nano we’ve ever seen go up in flames, this is apparently the second one (third or fourth – we’re not sure). Either way, the story goes that insurance agent Satish Sawant took delivery of his Nano in Prabhadevi, Mumbai.

Tata Motors arranged a company chauffeur to deliver the Nano to Sawant’s home since he doesn’t know how to drive (don’t ask us why he bought a car). On his way back home from the dealership, a biker on the Easter Express Highway overtook Sawant’s Nano and signaled that something was wrong with the car. After noticing flames coming out of the rear-end, Sawant and the driver immediately jumped out of the $2,500 car.

According to Sawant:

I have no idea what happened. A motorcycle rider overtook me and told me that the vehicle was on fire. The engine was behind me and I did not realize that the car was on fire.

The guys over at Indian Autos Blog are speculating that something could be wrong with the cooling system. We guess the saying “you get what you pay for” holds true on this case.

Pathetic car…. but the people who'd buy it probably deserve to burn and die.

    Hi,
I dont believe this story as the place given in story (Eastern Express Highway) and the place in the photo are not the same. There is no such place on the whole eastern express highway.
    Please stop spreading rumours.

Its is extremely saddening that even after contributing so much to really make India shine on a global platform, back home, it is the easiest to blame Tata’s capabilities for everything that is wrong.

It is really sad and unfortunate Nano is dragged into this needless controversy with utter disregard to propriety and whether all this is believable. Among the multiple roles played by media, the most important one is to enable readers make intelligent choices. Some is just making an attempt to tarnish the image of Tata who have created one of the largest conglomerates

Some Competitors are just spreading fabricated, false and malicious information attempting to tarnish the image reputed corporate. Such falsehood could damage India’s reputation as an investor friendly country.

Allegations and sensationalism have become the norm of any existence. Core motto is to just disrupt every belief, play with emotions and create ruckus. This incident is yet another creation of the nasty game of corporate upmanship and vested interest. Trust to come out with innovative assumptions and ideas to rake in publicity and disrupt NANO’s smooth run. Disgusting!

This vilification campaign” at the behest of “vested corporate interest” forces must be stopped. “It is necessary to nip these malafide endeavors in the bud for the sake of one the most transparent and customer friendly companies.

A lot of people defending this flamable box with wheels. This is pretty amusing!
Seems like these are cheap enough to buy a couple to watch burn around the 4th of July!
I know you can't expect a whole lot out of a car at this price, but it would be nice to not worry about the occasional engulfing flames.
