The U.S. market is going to be playing host to India”s largest utility vehicle maker, Mahindra & Mahindra. Mahindra hopes to announce a timeframe for the launch in the next two to three weeks. So far their launch, originally slated for 2010 has been pushed back due to safety and emission certification issues.

Mahindra aspires to dominate the SUV market, and without a commanding presence in the U.S. market, that is not possible. Their flagship pickup is expected to compete with the 2010 Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma. They hope to quadruple exports in 2010-2011, from an expected 10,000 units tis fiscal year, ending March 31.

Mahindra currently holds a 65% percent share of the Indian utility vehicles market and competes with Tata, Toyota, and GM.

Based on what I’ve read they are first entering the light duty pickup space with a diesel. The introduction of their SUV will come at a later stage. Their two pickups, the TR20 and TR40, sound very interesting: mid-sized, excellent payload capacity, impressive fuel mileage and, best of all, a clean diesel engine. There’s really nothing like this in the current compact/midsize pickup segment. So I say come quick Mahindra!
