AMG working on entry-level 4-cylinder turbo model based on F800 Style

According to a report by AutoCar, AMG will develop its own version of a new entry-level Mercedes-Benz coupe, previewed by the F800 Style concept that will debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. Sources say that the car will be an entry-level model that will compete with the likes of the Volkswagen Golf R and the Audi S3.

The move is a part of AMG’s efforts to attract younger customers to the high-performance brand, providing Mercedes-Benz with an image-boosting model for the U.S.

The report says that the model will use a turbocharged 2.0L direct-injected 4-cylinder gasoline engine mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system. Output is rumored to come in around 300-hp with a peak torque of 220 lb-ft.

The all-wheel-drive system will be shared with the new BLK, a compact SUV that will compete with the X1.
