Daimler AG is giving its dealer network ample time to prepare for the introduction of electric cars; the manufacturer aims to ensure that the network is prepared within two years.
“The expertise must be available in service shops by 2012,” said development chief Thomas Weber. “The entire organization has to be trained on the issue of high-voltage power.”
Though competitors are getting ready to roll out electric models ahead of Daimler, Weber says that they underestimate the time required to fully train and develop a competent service network for the electric technology.
The first 1,000 electric Smart cars will be delivered to leasees this year, and starting in 2012, Daimler aims to build at least 10,000 e-Smarts per year.
“Even in the electric age, the drivetrain will be part of the essence of the Daimler brand,” Weber said, referring to Daimler”s exceptional reputation with respect to quality vehicles.
