Speaking to AutoCar at the 2010 Car of Year Award event held for the new Polo, Volkswagen AG chairman Martin Winterkorn confirmed that the automaker is considering a smaller Porsche sports car and a smaller SUV.

“The Porsche model range is firmly based on the 911, Boxster, Cayenne and Cayman, and it will stay that way,” said Winterkorn. “We are also investigating opportunities for a smaller sports car and a smaller SUV – but I cannot say more at the moment.”

When asked how likely it is those two new models will make it to production, Winterkorn said: ”Let”s just say we do not usually waste our effort”¦”

We’ve previously heard rumors of a new entry-level Porsche that will share components from the upcoming compact Audi R4 sports car. While Audi’s R4 is slated for a 2011 debut, the Porsche version will not arrive until 2012.
