Remember Mercury? That third brand in the FoMoCo lineup next to Ford and Lincoln? While Mercury hasn’t shown a new car or new concept since before any of us were born, CEO Alan Mulally doesn’t seem to want to give up on the brand just yet.

Asked at the 2010 Washington Auto Show whether or not Mercury has a future, Mulally replied: ”The plan right now is (to develop) Ford, Lincoln and Mercury.”

He said that the plan is to position Mercury with smaller vehicles that fill the void between mainstream Ford and Lincoln branded vehicles.

Mercury to become a more Scion type brand for FoMoCo? We can see that.

Hmm seems a bit suspect. I can't see how they can differentiate themselves from the Focus and upcoming Fiesta. Adding a new nose and standard leather on those models is not a formula for success. Ford seems to be positioning their smaller models to be a success with the main parent brand so it seems this is just another bandaid to keep the Lincoln dealerships afloat.
