2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Tunnel Flip

There is no doubt that Mercedes-Benz is really proud of its new SLS AMG supercar – so much so that the Stuttgart automaker came up with a couple of outstanding TV spots for the vehicle in Germany. One spot, which has a lot of people talking (especially on YouTube) features the SLS AMG doing a barrel roll inside a tunnel (and we mean crawling on the walls and everything). Thinks its real? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section after the jump.

You can check out the ad spot and a bunch of others after the jump.

Refresher: Power comes from a 6.2L V8 making 563-hp with a maximum torque of 479 lb-ft. Mated to an E-SELECT system that controls the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission, the SLS AMG can go from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.7 seconds (with the Race Start launch control system) with a top speed of 196 mph.

im not seeing this as real. People who do things for real get a bunch of different angles of the same thing to prove it. Plus it looks a bit rendered (over-motion-blurred)

Wow that's freaking outstanding. Fake, but outstanding.

They played it up big time! Bringing its credibility into question. Awesome nonetheless!

no way its real, but a cool ad nonetheless

    Either way, pretty cool!

I believe it, it's just not all that impressive. Anyone who flies will tell you that a barrel roll is a 1G maneuver, meaning you can do it without spilling your martini. Getting up to speed would take some power, and the transitions from flat to the “barrel” could certainly cause a crash, but the roll itself is something a Yugo could do. It's still a seriously impressive car, though!

Nice computer generated cartoon. No way is this real. Now way they would put equipment much less unprotected people in the middle of such a stunt.

Seriously doubtful. Think of the physics. Where do the outward and upward vectors come from that would keep the car on the walls and ceiling? The centripetal force alone wouldn't be enough at that angle of attack. And as someone else pointed out, they wouldn't have the observers standing there in harm's way, and the driver would have a roll cage.
Cool video, though. Maybe I'll try it in my MG.

Then we can guess you don't fly then!!!
Commonly a 2-3 G event….never less than .5 but based on parabolic physics, simply cannot be performed on a 2 dimensional scale. Sorry….but its truly amazing what is believable to some folks.

roll the video back to 2:14 and stop it … look at the special ramps as he starts the roll and comes out of it … another thing to consider … look at the tunnel lighting … either it wasn’t there to begin with or it was removed to conduct the roll for real or they were removed through CGI … i’d like to think that M-B actually pulled this off although i will admit it could be a fake

How many angles can you get in a tunnel? If it were real it would be on the evening news, not just in their ad.

An F1 car can run up side down because of its downforce. Does the SLR have the requisite downforce. Saw the tunnel lights thing also.
Also wondering why there is no press releases, info on this if its real. It would be a helluva story.

  • Fstone

Because of the near 90 degree angle where the side meets the road…it just couldn’t happen, especially at the end. The car would be torn to shreds. Fun video….

Es una auto espectacular tendrian que manejarlo para saber la sensacion
