2010 Detroit: Cadillac XTS Platinum Concept

  • Key Competitors: BMW 7-Series, Lexus LS, Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
  • Power: 3.6L V6 direct-injected gasoline engine mated to a plug-in hybrid system – 350-hp / 295 lb-ft.
  • Transmission: 6-speed automatic.
  • Production: Nothing confirmed yet, but it’s pretty certain that it will.

Late last night we brought you details on the new concept from General Motors, the Cadillac XTS Platinum. Unveiled here in Detroit today, the XTS has yet to be confirmed for production. All GM is saying for now are things like these:

“The XTS Platinum concept is the next expression of Cadillac”s Art and Science execution philosophy, reflecting our drive to deliver the latest innovations in the most artful manner,” – Bryan Nesbitt, Cadillac general manager.

But then we heard Ed Welburn, GM’s design chief, talking to some other GM employee after CEO Ed Whitacre checked out the car for himself. “Looks like he likes it – let’s just hope the public likes it now.” With that in mind, the XTS is destined for production and should replace the Cadillac DTS and STS very soon.

Can we expect a XTS-V to go head-to-head with the Mercedes-Benz S63 (or S65) AMG? Only time will tell.

Should the leaders be concerned, let alone scared? Nope.

This car has the Crest and Wreath – AKA: the international symbol for old people.

  • maddog

That take is tired zermatt (like the opinions of many old people, ironically). This thing is miles ahead of the cars it replaces and will undoubtedly be thousands, if not tens of thousands, less than the S-Class Plug In.

  • GMfan87

i disagree, be very afraid. zermatt is about as biased against anything GM as I am FOR anything GM. also, as part of the more youthful generation (early to mid 20's) i can definately see a paradigm shift with my peers with respect to cadillac. in fact, it seems to me as though the older generations are the ones that still cling on to that stereotype.

    buick now, is another story….

  • zermatt

My not liking all GM products is not true. I like the Camero and their real trucks. I do, however, have no respect for the management team and the government intervention.

When I go to various places where oldsters hang out I inevitably see many Caddys, Buicks and Grand Marquis. I bet that when my 79 year old father sees this car he will tell me that he will replace his DTS with one.

Maybe the 20 year old fans and the 70 year old buyers can share the Cadillac dream, but the 20 year old fans cannot afford Cadillacs. The question is will BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Lexus BUYERS switch and that is the market that Cadillac is really after. I for one will not buying one (or a Lincoln for that matter).

Can Cadillac hold on for the 20 year old fans to become affluent enough to buy their cars? Time will tell.

  • zermatt

The buyer that is seriously considering a MB S Class plug in will be weighing the money that they save by buying a Cadillac? Really?

MB S Class and BMW 7 series buyers are not Cadillac buyers.Much different demographic.

I would hope that this car is is miles ahead of the car it replaces because GM has been coasting for the past 10 years.

i disagree, be very afraid. Cadillac has made great strides in recent years. being part of the more youthful generation i can definitely see the paradigm shift with respect to cadillac.

True, money is probably not the biggest factor with these buyers and I doubt this car eats into S-Class/7 sales much if at all. V coupe does 0-60 in 3.9, fastest production sedan in the world, 40 mile electric hybrid stuffed with tech and an iPhone app: these are cars for old people? Im sure everyone in Germany is absolutely thrilled GM got bailed out and will produce these cars

  • Mogar

WOW! Look at that interior! This car should turn out quite nicely. I would like the top portion of the taillight to be stretched a little further down that side crease and I don't like that billet grill but otherwise I think this looks very good and I'm sure the XTS-V will have a massive price advantage over the 760, s63, and s8.

  • zermatt

I agree, the CTS V coupe has impressive acceleration numbers and is the best looking Cadillac. I look forward to comparison tests.

Competition is good for the buyers.

GMfan87 – is this the 20 something that Cadillac is looking for?

i see the changing perception in more than just 20 somethings, i was merely offering that as an example of just how young that paradigm shift is taking place. i know plenty of 40 somethings in different backgrounds that can't get enough of the new styling. Even my father who is a diehard Toyota fan is considering a CTS for his next car

the fact is, in the full sized luxury market, the majority of the buyers are of an older age. that doesn't mean just because the company makes that kind of car, their other cars can't be attractive.

cadillac is making great strides and world class cars. they'll be fine in the long run and the competition better take note.

is it me or do i see some buick lacrosse towards the front?dont get me wrong but the car is a big body draped over a small platform i think that it should be on the zeta platform, rearwheel drive with an optional v12.thats what will get beamer and benz customers to caddy.
