Volkswagen of America’s boss Stefan Jacoby says that his company is aiming to more than double its sales in the United States within the next three to four years,

“We will sell 400,000 to 450,000 vehicles in 2012-2013,” Jacoby said at an event ahead of the Detroit Auto Show.

The German automaker sold 213,454 vehicles in the U.S. in 2009, down 4 percent from the previous year. The entire Volkswagen Group, including luxury brand Audi, sold 297,537 vehicles in the U.S. in 2009, down 5 percent from 2008 when it sold 313,581.

Jacoby said there is a strong possibility for Volkswagen’s U.S. business to become profitable in three years.

“We are a little bit more optimistic now than we were a few months ago,” he said.

I'm not sure they can do that when VW USA continues to marginalize customers that want manual transmissions, currently only offering them in base trim packages. A VW rep actually told me I would need to upgrade to an Audi in order to downgrade to a manual transmission. If that's so, I'd rather buy a BMW.

With what they have been doing with the new TDI engines, and some exciting cars expected in the near future, I think this is very possible. I think they need to bring over the Polo and Scirocco. Give cars more options like they have in Europe to really apeal to more and more people. They need to make a TDI engine available for all of their vehicles. The Jetta and Golf are nice because they don't use the Urea injection like Mercedes, BMW, and Touareg.
By the way, Golf TDI-OUTSTANDING CAR!
