2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

Unless you were living under a rock most of 2009, you already know that last year was a very tough one for the automotive industry. While sales of many models dropped to record lows, sales of the Chevrolet Corvette hit a historic low of just 13,934 units, the lowest since 1961 – unofficially.

Officially (according to data from Edmunds.com), 2009 was the worst year for the model in 19 years when sales hit 17,472 in 1991. In 2008, Corvette sales came in at 26,971, down 6,714 units from 2007.

Who wants to purchased a car from a government owned company? GM should have been in the grave 12 months ago. Instead, the patient is in a permanent vegetative state thanks to the taxpayers.

It's understandable since people are moving away from sports cars to fuel-efficient cars.

    Pat,

I really don't think that the buyers (40 to 55 year old, gold chain wearing, fat guys) of new Corvettes give a rat's ass about fuel efficiency. Corvettes are a discretionary purchase and not a need to have purchase.

It must be tough to convince the "old ball and chain" that you need a Vette when she is still driving the 2002 Malibu and has switched from Starbucks coffee to Dunkin Donuts.

I guess Edmunds either forgot about or disregarded 1997. That was the year that the C5 Corvette Coupe debuted and only 9,752 Corvettes were produced.

Although sales are down, many things are looking up for Corvette. The new Grand Sport models are selling briskly, nationwide inventories are being aggressively managed which has reduced supply from well over 8,000 available a year ago to about 2,800 units and the initial demand for the Corvette ZR1 appears to have peaked which should bring pricing back to or below MSRP.
